The IEJ along with our partners at Climate Finance for Equitable Transitions (CLiFT) made a joint submission to the Presidential Climate Commission on South Africa’s Just Energy Transition – Investment Plan (JET-IP).
Both the IEJ and CLiFT have reservations on whether the JET-IP in its current format will achieve the aims set for itself. These reservations, expanded on in our submission, include:
- Whether the JET-IP will realistically raise the climate finance needed.
- The fiscal, legal, policy and socio-economic risks the JET-IP creates.
- The likelihood that the JET-IP will result in South Africa failing to meet its mitigation targets.
- The likelihood that the JET-IP will result in South Africa failing to meet its socio-economic objectives – the ‘just’ requirement of a just energy transition.
