Manufacturing has been regarded as the main source of productivity growth and plays a key role in employment creation. Manufacturing is important due to its interdependencies with agriculture and mining, on the one hand, and services like engineering and design on the other. But South Africa’s manufacturing industry is deindustrialising. To grow employment, South Africa needs to have targeted interventions in diversified labour absorbing industries.
