Climate Justice

Science shows that as the impacts of climate change accelerate, its negative impacts, including through extreme weather events, will take an increasing toll in developing countries. Climate change is a major threat, particularly to poor people in Africa. Systemic and rapid changes are needed to move our economies from their carbon intensive growth path.

The IEJ’s climate justice programme aimed to:

  1. Undertake research which deeply interrogates the nature of the climate challenge;
  2. Develop and ensure the adoption of policy options for economic transformation which address the climate crisis, through a ‘just transition’ which protects workers and communities; and
  3. Facilitate conversations and mobilisation by students, communities, and workers around their demands for climate justice. This should culminate in the adoption of a Green New Deal for South Africa and the region.
