Submission on the Companies Amendment Bill, 2021

In this submission, civil society organisations welcomed the introduction of long-overdue legal requirements for wage gap disclosure, a binding vote on executive pay, and transparency in relation to company ownership. The inequality which characterises South African society is widespread and multidimensional, and poses arguably the country’s biggest socio-economic challenge. Despite decades of recognition of this challenge, little progress has been made in addressing it since the end of apartheid.

It is irresponsible and disingenuous of business to argue against transparency in relation to wage gaps, in the most unequal society in the world, as some sectors of the business community continue to do.
