Institute for Economic Justice joins call for Gaza Ceasefire

Statement | Institute for Economic Justice joins call for Gaza Ceasefire

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) joins calls from around the world for an immediate cease to Israel’s assault on Gaza, the lifting of the blockade preventing essential medicines, fuel, food, and water from entering Gaza, and holding all those responsible for war crimes accountable. The call for a ceasefire occurs in the context of Israel’s occupation of Palestine and its imposition of apartheid. As an organisation founded on the values of justice, equality, and solidarity, the IEJ condemns both structural oppression and the current cycle of violence.

Over the past month, the people of Gaza have faced a relentless assault by Israeli forces, following Hamas’s unprecedented attack in southern Israel. The scale of Israel’s military attack is staggering. To date, over 11 000 Palestinians have been killed, over 4,500 of them children. At least 27,000 Palestinians have been injured. International human rights bodies regard Israel’s assault on Gaza as a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The Israeli assault was launched in retaliation to the attack by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups on 7 October 2023. These groups fired rockets into Israeli military and civilian targets and sent fighters into southern Israel. More than 1,200 Israelis, including at least 31 children, have been killed with over 5,000 injured, and 240 taken captive, including 30 children.

This subsequent violence has collapsed systems in Gaza, with devastating consequences for the 2.3 million Palestinians locked in the Gaza Strip. Israeli strikes appear to have deliberately targeted critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water and sanitation facilities. Bombing has occurred in areas designated for safe passage. Over 250,000 residential units have been damaged, with over 40,000 completely destroyed. A pitiful amount of aid has been allowed into Gaza, with doctors persistently pleading for help and decrying the “nightmarish conditions” in Gaza’s hospitals. These events represent gross violation of international law.

Israel’s response has not been limited to Gaza, with at least 183 Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank. It is also not limited to military action, with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank (there in contravention of international law) participating in raids that drive Palestinians from their land. This reinforces long-standing patterns of attacks on Palestinian civilians and dispossession of land.

International law is unequivocal – the assault on Gaza and the attacks on Israeli civilians are crimes for which those responsible must be held accountable. International law obligations are also nonreciprocal: one war crime does not justify another. We condemn these grave breaches of international human rights and humanitarian law and add our voice to the global movement rallying to demand justice.

There is no military solution to this crisis. The war is rooted in six decades of military occupation that has denied Palestinians their most basic rights. The international community has consistently concluded that this constitutes the crime of apartheid under international law. This status quo not only brutalises Palestinians, but fails to protect Israeli civilians.

As an organisation advocating for economic justice in post-apartheid South Africa, we are  particularly sensitive to the offences of settler colonialism and apartheid. Our commitment to challenging injustice is not limited by national boundaries.

The ongoing assault on Gaza – and the broader dispossession of Palestinians – would not be possible without the overt support of global powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and specific European countries, notably France and Germany. The governments in these countries are complicit and need to change course.

The ramifications of the crisis reach well beyond the borders of Israel and Palestine. Global reports of violent expressions of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, and the violation of the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, are multiplying. Israel’s attacks on Gaza fuel further anti-semitic hatred and dangerous fundamentalism. We condemn all acts of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.

No one civilian population is more deserving than another. We stand with all those who demand justice and equal rights for all living within Palestine and Israel, and the need for a lasting political solution that seeks peace, security, and freedom for all.

We join calls for:

  • An immediate ceasefire to stop all military action in Gaza and the West Bank.
  • The safe passage of all necessary humanitarian aid.
  • The restoration of basic services.
  • The release of over 200 hostages taken by Hamas and the thousands of Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel.
  • The establishment of an international protective presence in the occupied Palestinian territory.
  • An embargo on the delivery of arms and military equipment to all parties to the conflict.
  • The protection of all those publicly standing in solidarity with Palestine, including but not limited to students, academics, and worker’s movements.
  • The South African government to continue to isolate Israel diplomatically and use its role in the international community to bring about a ceasefire.
  • The institution of necessary investigations and criminal proceedings to hold those responsible for war crimes accountable.
  • Accelerating the boycott, disinvestment, and sanctions campaign against Israel and targeted corporations.
  • An end to the occupation of Gaza and West Bank, and the end of Israeli apartheid.
