Feminist Economics Summer School 2023

The IEJ successfully hosted its third annual Feminist Economics Summer School (FESS) from 29 January to 3 February 2023. The theme for FESS 2023 was Social reproduction and the changing world of work.

The 2023 Summer School aimed to make visible the complex entanglements of global capitalism and social reproduction by equipping participants with conceptual and methodological tools grounded in feminist economics.

The Summer School centred social reproduction as a key analytical and conceptual lens to assess the complex features of the political economy of work in the African context. By embracing a distinctly African feminist lens, the Summer School exposed participants to the ways in which social reproduction is deeply embedded in the regeneration and maintenance of racial, gender, and class inequality. Furthermore, participants explored the contributions of African feminist economics in expanding and transcending narrow conceptions of ‘work’. The Summer School further facilitated discussions around the changing world of work by relating these changes to processes of social reproduction understood from the particular vantage point of the Global South.
