Advancing economic justice and systemic change

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) made significant strides in 2024, driving impactful research, advocacy, and policy interventions to advance economic justice, climate resilience, and feminist economics. Our work strengthened South Africa’s role in global economic governance while pushing for systemic reforms in finance, social protection, and sustainable development.

Strengthening Leadership and Global Influence
The IEJ expanded its team to 27 staff members and three research associates, enhancing our capacity for policy impact. Executive Director Dr. Gilad Isaacs contributed to South Africa’s Medium-Term Strategic Framework, while Dr. Basani Baloyi engaged with G20 Brazil’s civil society platform. Our team earned prestigious accolades, including the Ruth First Prize and Mail & Guardian’s Greening the Future Award.

Key achievements in economic justice

  • Budget and Tax Justice: Secured R150 billion from South Africa’s GFECRA reserves, advocating against austerity.
  • Climate Finance: Published a groundbreaking toolkit on rights-based climate investment, influencing national policy.
  • Feminist Economics: Hosted the 5th Feminist Economics Summer School, expanding research on care economies and gender justice.
  • Basic Income Grant: Advanced litigation and advocacy, securing a R20 SRD grant increase—benefitting millions.

Global policy impact
The IEJ played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s G20 2025 agenda, co-hosting workshops on debt justice and wealth taxation. We contributed to UN tax reforms, IMF-World Bank advocacy, and climate finance debates, ensuring Global South perspectives were prioritised.

Research and advocacy for systemic change
From food systems transformation to heterodox economics education, our projects challenged neoliberal orthodoxy. We published influential policy briefs, engaged stakeholders, and built coalitions to drive equitable economic policies.

Looking ahead
As we move into 2025, the IEJ remains committed to advancing a just, sustainable economy. Our work in climate finance, feminist economics, and social protection will continue shaping policies that prioritise equity, rights, and planetary wellbeing.
