2023: A year of growth and impact
Celebrating our fifth anniversary in 2023, the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) reflects on a year of substantial progress and expansion. With a newly adopted five-year plan and strategic focus, we intensified efforts across key project areas, solidifying our reputation as an impactful organisation. An organisation driving economic justice in South Africa and across the continent.
Team expansion and expertise
Our team has grown significantly, now comprising 23 staff members and three research associates. This growth aligns with our ambitious objectives, enhancing our capacity to effect meaningful change.
Review of our 2023 work
Building Resilience in Food Systems: From publishing discussion papers to facilitating national policy dialogues, our efforts have catalysed crucial discussions and collaborations in transitioning South Africa’s food system towards justice and sustainability.
Challenging Economic Orthodoxies: Hosting events, engaging in international projects, and fostering student activism, we’ve strengthened heterodox economic perspectives, expanding our reach and impact both locally and globally.
Advancing Feminist Economics: Through summits, conferences, and publications, we’ve deepened understanding and action around feminist economics, particularly concerning care work and gender-based issues.
Driving Just Energy Transition: Initiating cross-country projects and advocating for policy coherence, we’re paving the way for renewable energy industrialisation and sustainable livelihoods, with a focus on local communities and women.
Resourcing for Rights Realisation: Through strategic advocacy and engagement, we’ve influenced policy discussions and decisions, resisting austerity measures and advocating for transparent and accountable financial practices.
Special Projects and Universal Basic Income Guarantee (UBIG): From cannabis industry reports to legal challenges on regulations to the Social Relief of Distress grants, we’ve addressed diverse issues, including advocating for a UBIG, and have shaped public discourse.
Media engagement
In 2023, our team continued to contribute actively to policy debates through media engagements, interviews, and opinion pieces, significantly expanding our social media reach and media presence.
Conclusion
As we move forward into our sixth year, the IEJ remains committed to driving transformative change, challenging injustices, and advocating for a more equitable and sustainable economic future for all. The organisation is set to build on the work reflected in this 2023 Year in Review in 2024.
